| You know this info about Tramadol or Ultram? |
A
doctor may have prescribed Ultram (generic name: Tramadol) for your
moderate to severe pain, like chronic headaches or inflammation. Many
doctors have seen this as an effective treatment for pain since its
introduction in 1995. Although it provides the benefits of an
anti-inflammatory drug, it does not have the same risk for
gastrointestinal side effects that the NSAIDs have.
Although
it is not classified as belonging to the narcotic or opiate drug
family, Ultram is equally effective in reducing pain.
It
would seem to be a terrific drug for treating pain, because it
possesses all of the good qualities of both narcotic and opiate drugs
without their drawbacks.
The biggest negative
associated with narcotic medicines is their addictive quality. Most
often, this causes doctors to use caution or even not prescribe them.
If
you have taken narcotic medications for pain in the past (Vicodin,
Percocet, Demerol, Morphine, or similar drugs), then you are already
aware of their secondary effects and how they can affect you. Many
people find these side effects to be pleasurable, thus developing a
quick and pervasive dependence that prompts them to engage in
drug-seeking behaviors.
However, others taking
these drugs will experience highly undesirable side effects affecting
the digestive system, including nausea and vomiting. Some other
symptoms are very annoying, like excessive itching and sleepiness.
Patients who experience these side effects will not likely be prone to
dependence; in fact they would rather be in pain than continue the
drug.
If you are on Ultram, you will notice the
absence of both the favorable and unfavorable side effects of narcotics
and opiates. In addition, it will very probably reduce your pain to a
manageable level.
People feel safe using this
medication, without any worries about becoming dependent on it. This is
where you need to understand the true facts about Ultram. In fact,
although it was initially believed that Ultram does not cause
dependency, this is far from true. Ultram is actually a highly
habit-forming and addictive medication.
One reason
for this is that Ultram may have an ingredient that is also included in
the manufacture of anti-depressant drugs. This results in an
improvement in patients' overall mood and well-being. The high from
this isn't like the high received from other drugs. It is less obvious,
but does provide an improved quality of life.
The
medication also contains a very small amount of a narcotic drug -- so
small it is not even mentioned by the maker. In combination with the
anti-depressant features, this promotes a situation where an addiction
can take hold.
Some people taking the drug will
not want to go off it at any time, and do not perceive any problem with
this. This can also happen when a person is using an antidepressant
medication for the treatment of depression. Their lives became
enjoyable again, prompting them to use the medication for a prolonged
period. As with many different medications, when Ultram is suddenly
stopped, the body responds harshly and sometimes dangerously.
This
often applies to patients who have grown accustomed to medicating their
physical and emotional troubles with Ultram. The symptoms of withdrawal
are as bad as withdrawal from heroin. This helps to promote continued
use of the medication, which then results in the previously-discussed
drug-seeking behaviors that are similar to the ones usually observed
with users of opiates and narcotics. The
top dosage permitted is 400 milligrams, or eight 50 mg pills over 24
hours. There have been people who abuse Ultram and take 15-20 pills
each day. A lot of people have even been using forged prescriptions to
get the drug.
There are a great number of
physicians who have no knowledge of these dangers, so they prescribe
the medication without properly warning their patients.
Some
doctors and medical practices, however, have found out about this
through the experiences of patients, and have started treating Ultram
with the identical care and restrictiveness they apply to narcotic pain
medications.
Your physician might not be aware of
the number of people who have such terrible results using this
medication. If a doctor prescribes either Ultram or Tramadol for you,
make sure you take it with caution, as you can develop a dependence on
this drug unintentionally.
